DISCUSSION n. 12: CHRIST IN CONCRETE - due April 13

COMMENT:

NO MORE THAN 3 PEOPLE CAN CHOOSE THE SAME CHAPTER

Choose one chapter in the second part of the book (after page 60) that somehow in your opinion "does not fit" well with the rest of the book.  Explain the reason of your choice.

REPLY:  find a comment you don't agree with and explain WHY you think that particular chapter does fit or adds something relevant.

  1. l think the chapter where Annunziata takes Paul to see The Cripple feels out of place but in an incredible way. lt felt like it took place outside the reality of the novel and existed in a different world. lt was so self-contained and existed so clearly to lead the characters in a different direction and it was very interesting to read.

    1. I actually thought that this chapter was one of the best ones in the novel. Like i said in my comment, there was so much sadness throughout the book. But by having the family able to speak to Geremio really gave the readers, and his family, some closure for his death.

    2. I also thought this part of the book was really interesting and brought some hope and relief for family.

  2. I feel like the chapter where Luigi and Cola get married is totally irrelevant. Yes it is good to have some uplifting news in this book given that there was so much heartbreak and sadness, but it was honestly not necessary and had nothing to do with the actual storyline in the book

    1. I disagree. I felt like that part of the novel showed the cheery Italian spirit. It was a nice break from all the sadness and the author was able to portray a nice Italian wedding scene, a type of cheeriness we have not yet seen in the books we've read.

    2. I also disagree. I think this connects back to the statement earlier in the novel that "the living keep on living." Just because they are starving and poor does not mean that can't enjoy the simple happiness of a marriage and moving forward in life. I think it was a nice break from the bleakness of their world.

  3. I feel like the last chapter of the book when Annunziata left her children was irrelevant. It was sad to see how this family lost their father now their mother, for those poor children it was so sad and unfair that they left them alone . After all that hardship I think family deserved better or happier ending.

  4. I also felt like The Cripple had nothing to do with the book. Almost as if it was there just to take up space. In my mind I thought what the cripple was saying to Annunziata and Paul was kind of fake, almost just to make them feel better about his death.

    1. I disagree! The cripple was connecting them to Geremio, who is dead. This is really important in their struggle to continue on. Because by feeling connected to him, and feeling like they will one day see each other again in heaven makes the entire struggle of everyday life worth something.

    2. I thought it was important because the reader was able to see Paul's struggle with faith and hope.

  5. I feel as thought the first chapter of the Fiesta part had little to do with the story's overall plot. Paul and his "friend' go to the memorial. Although this scene is supposed to suggest the theme of remembrance, I felt it out of place in the story. It felt very "American" to me and therefore did not ring true to the novel's authentic Italian feel. I could have easily done without this chapter.

  6. I feel like the chapter where Nazone was placed on a cross was totally irrelevant to the book. Perhaps there is some symbolism the author is trying to portray that I'm not understanding, but I just dont see how it connects to anything before or after the moment. I thought that part of the story was so strange. The rest of the book seemed to perfectly pair high and low points to tell a story. But this part, to me, had no significance.

  7. I felt like the second chapter in "Tenement" was so irrelevant. Only three pages long, it focuses on Luigi on the hospital bed and the lice on his head. He's super shy when Cola comes around but I honestly didn't understand why this was in the book. I feel like it has nothing to do with the plot other than Luigi and Cola interacting, but I don't think it needed to have it's own short chapter.

  8. The second chapter of "Tenement" felt unimportant to me simply because I found myself skimming it as I read and afterwards I felt as if I had not missed anything important. Luigi and Cola's relationship is important in the large scale but in this scene, it feels stuck on to explain the lice on his head. I don't necessarily think it would serve the novel to be taken out but I don't think it pushes the plot further or reveals any character that we don't already know about.

    1. Perhaps it reveals more about a character and how one deals with unfortunate dilemmas.Yes no new introduction but Luigi is a big part of the book and Paul's story and seeing how he tackles his life after so many incidents I believe is crucial to the story itself.

  9. Fiesta had me confused for the most part of it. Too much 'jibber-jabber' and I had to re read some of the lines several times in order not to miss something important but instead came to a conclusion that most of it was not important. To me it did not fit with the book and instead served as a distraction or even a break in the book.
